    Whether you are fresh-faced or older and wiser, knowing how to care for your skin at each stage of your life is the key to complexion confidence. We wanted to bring you a guide focused on each decade to give you some tips on how to look after your skin from your 20s through to your 50s.

    IN YOUR 20’s

    Elasticity and hydration of the skin are at their peak so you want to take good care of it.

    But from 25 years onwards, elasticity starts to drop and I find that most women in their 20s don't hydrate themselves enough which leads to fine lines and wrinkles especially around the eyes.

    I always recommend women in their 20s to start investing in good skincare products to reduce and prevent signs of premature ageing, maintaining their youthful and healthy looking skin as long as possible.

    1. Opt for lightweight serums or lotions to hydrate your skin. Since you may have just left the years of teenage breakouts, you will want to keep them at bay and not use heavy creams that may clog your pores.

    2. You may still be enjoying late nights during university or company parties. Make sure you are ‘obsessed’ with cleaning your skin before you go to bed. I would recommend using a gentle and effective cleanser to remove make up, daily dirt and impurities…This will help to prevent any clogging of the pores.

    3. From the age of 25 years old, the skin’s elasticity starts to decline. Start investing in a good youth-protecting eye serum or gel.

    In YOUR 30’s

    Youthful skin has abundance of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid.

    As the years go by, these three components decrease in amount. After the age of 30, our skin loses about 1% of collagen a year. Smoking, unmanaged stress and a sedentary, unhealthy lifestyle can speed up the degradation.

    Two important hormones involved in the youth of the skin are oestrogen and testosterone. Oestrogen increases skin thickness, collagen, blood flow and glycoaminoglycans (which hold the skin’s water content). From 30 onwards, oestrogen levels start to drop and we start noticing the first signs of lines and wrinkles, especially around the eyes.

    In our 30s, as oestrogen starts to fall, testosterone - the hormone in charge of muscle strength, gclearfixth spurts and confidence become relatively higher. And if we don’t balance our hormones through a healthy lifestyle and appropriate stress management we can get adult acne.

    In this decade you may start to notice fine lines around your eyes or even on your forehead. You may also notice your skin becoming more uneven in type and tone, with a mix of dehydration on the cheeks and jawline and oily on the T-zone. The skin tips below aim to help your skin stay looking its best.

    1. Don’t skip on exfoliation. Exfoliation helps to remove dead skin cells and encourage new cell formation.

    2. Dedicate some "Me Time" each week to take care of your skin with a clay or hydrating mask depending on your skin type. This will give the skin a much-needed boost and it also saves on time if you don’t have time to go to a beauty clinic.

    3. It’s time to invest in an anti-ageing skincare range. Your skin will benefit from firming and skin renewing ingredients that anti-ageing skincare ranges have to offer.

    4. Use sun protection every day even if it’s cloudy to minimise cell damage and appearance of premature ageing.

    In YOUR 40’s

    You are a true superwoman now and have honed your routine so you can be effective at work and at home.

    In your 40s, you may notice your skin becoming more dehydrated and it has a lack of firmness. Pores may appear larger and your skin texture rougher. Cell renewal slows down so your skin may look dull and tired.

    As we move into our 40s, our hormones continue to drop, this time including testosterone. This affects the muscle tone of the face, becoming more lax and the skin tends to feel drier. During this time, it’s important to hydrate the skin to maintain its smoothness.

    1. Increase the frequency of exfoliation to help improve the skin texture and reduce the appearance of large pores. Exfoliation also helps to keep your skin glowing and bright.

    2. Add a lighter night cream to moisturise and hydrate your skin.

    In YOUR 50’s

    Women go through menopause typically in their 50s.

    Due to the drop in oestrogen, the skin becomes pale, dry, thin and fragile. The skin loses its elasticity and wrinkles are easier to set in. Oestrogen is a natural anti-inflammatory so you may find the skin looking and feeling flushed, red and blotchy. However it is possible to help balance your hormones through healthy clean eating and gentle exercises. Here are some tips to ensure your skin feels firmer, less sensitive, hydrated, glowing and may reduce some signs of ageing that might be of concern.

    1. Use calming products as your skin is less likely to react.

    2. Reduce the frequency of exfoliation and use a milder formulation.
