WOMEN'S DAY 2020
WE'RE CELEBRATING WOMEN WHO INSPIRE US DAY IN, DAY OUT
Discover the inspiring women who make us what we are – a fearlessly feminist brand, fighting to make the world a fairer & more beautiful place.
MEET THE WASTE PICKERS OF BENGALURU
It’s no secret that plastic pollution has become a global crisis and the planet is drowning in plastic. It affects marine and ocean life, but it affects people too. In India, almost a third of waste is uncollected. This has given rise to 1.5 million people known as ‘waste pickers’ who collect this waste in the informal sector. In Bengaluru, we’re working with an organisation who proudly call themselves the ‘Green Force’. They work with waste pickers - the unsung heroes who work tirelessly to clean up the city’s streets. Waste pickers are mostly made up of ‘dalits’, formally known as ‘untouchables’ - the lowest social group in India’s caste system. This means that they are vulnerable to discrimination and poor working conditions.
That’s why we want to do more than fight pollution. We want to drive social change and help to empower people too.

MEET THE WOMEN OF MANORAMA
Our bestselling Mango Body Butter is enriched with the goodness of Mango Seed Oil from India. Our Community Trade Mango Seed Oil is sustainably sourced from Manorama Industries in Chattisgarh, India. We began working with the local women’s cooperatives there in 2017. They hand-collect the mangoes from the forest floor, hand-peel the flesh and crack the seeds. They then send them to a production facility to extract their nourishing oil. Manorama Industries give the cooperatives training on harvesting methods, helping protect India’s mango trees while providing a sustainable source of income. During harvesting season, these women carry an incredible 10-20kg of fruit every day.
MEET THE TUNGTEIYA WOMEN OF GHANA
We’ve sustainably sourced our Community Trade shea butter from the Tungteiya Women’s Association in northern Ghana since 1994. 640 women from 11 villages handcraft 390 tons of shea butter for us every year using an 18-stage process passed from mother to daughter for generations. Each woman takes two days to expertly produce our shea in 25kg batches using traditional techniques to ensure the highest quality.
As well as paying a fair price, we pay a premium to help empower these women and help them to achieve an independent income, increased confidence and respect. This premium also helps fund community projects that positively impact the lives of 49,000 people across 11 villages every year. These community projects include building 7 schools that educate 1,200 students and enabling access for the community to safe water and health centres.
We want to know who inspires you to make our world a better place. Whether it’s your mum, neighbour, yoga teacher or even your favourite barista, we want to hear all about her. Share a picture of her on Instagram, Facebook or Twitter with a few words on why she’s inspired you and the impact she’s had on your life.
